IGCSE English as a Second Language - Cambridge Syllabus

Form Filling 2 - (Added March 1, 2011)

Anna Christopher is an 18 year old student of Mountain Home School. She lives in England with her parents at 24 Primrose Avenue, Litchfield District, West Midlands. Anna was born on 15th August, 1989 and she can be contacted through email at annachristopher@gmail.com or via telephone at 44-5698762. Anna is an avid cyclist and her father David has always encouraged her to participate in all road and circuit races held in their county and nearby districts.

Anna’ father saw the following snippet in Midlands Daily.

“On the 17th of September, 100 of the region’s top amateur cyclists will battle it out around a 32 kilometre closed circuit around Scarborough Business Park. Expect closely fought, high speed action and perhaps a few spills as they fight it out during the one hour race….”

Anna is now interested in the upcoming Ride Championship to be held in September. It is a race that is going to test her physically as it is 32 kilometres and one of the requirements of the race is that entrants are eligible only if they are born on or before 1992. The race is open to all-comers, and is also a point-scoring event for those competing in this season’s Wessex Cycle Racing League. In the October 2009, 27 kilometers Crosstrax Summer Circuit, Anna had scored 13 points. She was placed 25th in the Amateur category of the race. The Crosstrax prize money of £2000 went to Mary Higgins.

David has spoken to a local publishing company for sponsorship and Greenland Publishers have agreed to sponsor Anna. They will bear the expenses of her equipment and transportation to and from the venue. Anna has decided that if she wins the prize money she will donate the entire proceeds to an old age home in her area called, ‘The Nest’.

This year’s Ride Circuit Championship will be around Scarborough Business Park at East field and will be on closed roads. Any bikes can be used for this race but as the race is on roads, any specific road bikes will have an advantage. It is important to have a Road Circuit License number and Anna’s is ZX-35AB.

Maps of the circuit can be had from www.ridemaps.co.uk. For further details, contact the organiser, Martin Baker, on 07779 446 832 / 01934 612 500. Entries are £15.00 in advance, either by post to Martin or online, conveniently using your credit or debit card for payment, at www.rideentryweb.co.uk.

Form filling 1

Read the article about a special educational residential course in Copenhagen, Denmark. Imagine you are Hussein, and complete the form on the following page.

Hussein Rasheed is 16 and attends Baa Atoll Education Centre, Roashanee Road, Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll. Baa Atoll belongs to the Republic of Maldives which is situated in the Indian Ocean, and it’s a chain of islands). The school’s email address is baec@education.org.mv  and its office telephone number is 6608508 (putting code 960 before it if dialing from outside Maldives). In an emergency, when the school is closed, the school secretary, Ms Anthu, may be contacted on 6608505. Hussein’s school has recently been lucky to win an amazing prize in a competition. The prize is for a group of students (plus two of their teachers) to visit Copenhagen, Denmark, to attend a Special Educational Residential Course – entirely free of charge. They will be staying at the Course Centre during their visit.

Twenty students at Hussein’s school (including Hussein) – ten boys and ten girls – will attend the course, and they will be accompanied by their teachers Mr. Christie and Ms.Joan. The students will be accommodated in pairs, with boys and girls occupying separate accommodation blocks. The course will last for four days, from Monday 17 July until Thursday 20 July inclusive, but because of the long journey involved, the group will need to arrive one day before the start of the course, departing after breakfast on 21 July. They will fly out from Male’ International Airport, and the number of the flight they have booked is MM001. The daily programme for the course will begin at 8.15 each morning. At the weekend, lunch is served at 1.00 pm, but is one hour earlier on all other days. The course finishes each day at 4.00 pm and then there is a relaxation period on one hour, and study preparation of one and a half hours before dinner.

There are facilities for the group to relax, and there will be one afternoon of a choice of organised activities. In Hussein’s group most of the students are interested in drawing and painting, and table tennis and/or performing plays; the rest enjoy swimming and going for long walks. At the course Centre there is a swimming pool (but it is open on Saturdays and Sundays only). One of the days of the course will involve a tour of the historic sights of Copenhagen, with a packed lunch provided; transport by bus can be supplied if requested. Eleven of the students in the group are strict vegetarians, and one of them is seriously allergic to tuna. Most of them speak ‘Dhivehi’ as the ‘main’ language when they are back at home with their families; the main languages spoken by the others are: Spanish, Hindi, Arabic and Urdu. All the students in Hussein’s group are used to talking to their teachers and to each other in English at school, and they are all studying it for an IGCSE examination.

So that everything will run smoothly, the Course Centre organizers need Hussein’s school to give them some information before arrival, and the task has been given to Hussein.

Imagine you are Hussein and complete the form.
